Overview & Background
The Youth Assets Committee of the CSC oversees projects that help young people grow into healthy, caring, responsible adults.

Through local community projects, youth are provided with opportunities to be "actors" rather than passive recipients of services. Projects encourage youth to exercise their decision-making skills and improve their social competencies:

Knowing how to plan ahead, make choices and follow-
through on tasks.

Accepting personal reponsibility.

Becoming a caring person by providing service to others.

Being a mentor to younger children.

Developing empathy for other and being sensitive to their
needs; and/or

Being comfortable with people of different cultural, racial,
and ethnic backgrounds.

The Youth Assets Initiative is based on work by the Search Institute, Minneapolis, MN, which developed the Youth Developmental Asset Framework. This research revealed 40 developmental assets as being critical to the positive growth of young people.

Mini-Grant RFPs
To promote these important developmental assets, County Executive William Steinhaus and the County Legislature are providing mini-grants for 2007 Youth Assets projects. Funding is available in the amounts of $500, $750 or $1,000 per project.

For questions on the mini-grants, please call Rosemary McMann, Dutchess County Youth Bureau, (845) 486-3660 or email Rmcmann@co.dutchess.ny.us.

Guidelines for the mini-grants and the RFP itself can be found on the Dutchess County Youth Bureau website.
