Overview
In January 2000, County Executive William Steinhaus established the Children’s Health Initiative (CHI). The aim of the CHI is to reach all young people in Dutchess County with a prevention message that will help them make healthy choices.

Mr. Steinhaus chose the Dutchess County Children’s Services Council to oversee CHI, which includes the

development, implementation and evaluation of a strategic plan for funding and service delivery.

The Children’s Health Initiative committee is charged with

Overseeing the RFP process.

Assuring that only the most effective, research-based
programs are funded.

Monitoring and evaluating the programmatic and fiscal
activities associated with all grants funded by this
initiative.

Two programs that have grown out of the CHI are the Youth Tobacco Use Prevention program and the Childhood Obesity Prevention program. These projects are detailed on subsequent pages.
